Trasylol: A Defective Drug You May Have Been Given

Imagine undergoing a lifesaving, open-heart surgery only to find out that, while you were under anesthesia, you were given a drug that could kill you.

It happened to 4.5 million people worldwide who were given Trasylol to control bleeding during coronary artery bypass graft surgery and heart valve surgery.

If you had open heart surgery and later experienced heart failure, stroke, heart attack or kidney problems, including renal failure, please contact the attorneys of Skikos, Crawford, Skikos, Joseph & Millican LLP.

We help people who were injured by Trasylol recover financial compensation for damages. We also represent people whose loved ones died a wrongful death because they were given Trasylol.

A High-Risk Drug

Manufactured by Bayer, Trasylol is a defective drug that is so risky:

  • It causes strokes, heart failure, heart attacks, kidney damage, renal failure and death.
  • It is estimated to have caused more than 140,000 cases of kidney damage.
  • It caused as many as 1,000 deaths a month.

Worst of all, the manufacturer knew of its risks and did nothing to protect patients.

In 2006, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that patients given Trasylol experienced a "55 percent increase in the risk of myocardial infarction or heart failure and a 181 percent increase in the risk of stroke" compared to patients given less expensive, generic drugs to prevent bleeding.

Used Despite Known Risks

Still it was not withdrawn from the market until 2007, and then still administered to a limited number of patients. The author of the 2006 study estimates that 22,000 lives could have been saved if the FDA or Bayer had pulled the drug from the market after his study was published.
